Town of Pittsboro Receives First Water Test Results Post-GAC, Sees Significant PFAS Improvements
PITTSBORO, NC – The Town of Pittsboro has recently received our water's first set of test results following the installation of the Granular Activated Carbon (GAC) advanced filtration system. The Town is pleased to see significant reductions in the amounts of PFOA/PFOS, among other substances, in our finished water.
The GAC system installed at the Water Treatment Plant is designed to filter out chemicals known as perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances, or PFAS. Across this group of chemicals, the GAC removed more than 85% of the chemical. For more detailed information, please see the chart below.
Substance | Raw Water | Finished Water | Percent Reduced |
Perfluorooctanoic Acid (PFOA) | 6.19 ng/L | 0.833 | 86.54% |
Perfluorooctane Sulfonate (PFOS) | 12.4 ng/L | 1.55 ng/L | 87.50% |
Perfluorooctanesulfonamide (PFOSA) | Not Detected | - | - |
Perfluorononanoic acid (PFNA) | 1.01 ng/L | 0.144 ng/L | 85.74% |
Perfluorononanesulfonic acid (PFNS) | Not Detected | - | - |
Perfluorodecanoic acid (PFDA) | 0.737 ng/L | 0.0872 ng/L | 88.17% |
Note - Raw Water is sampled as it is pulled from the Haw River, and Finished Water is sampled as it leaves the Water Plant and enters the distribution system. 1 ng/L equals 1 par per trillion (PPT).
As the Water Plant continues to produce finished water filtered through the GAC filtration system, concentrations of the chemicals currently in our storage tanks and distribution system will continue to decrease.
